Understanding Phytocannabinoids

What you need to know about CBD and other cannabinoids

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a chemical in the Cannabis sativa plant. The 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to sell hemp and hemp products in the U.S. cannabidiol seems to prevent the breakdown of a chemical in the brain that affects pain, mood, and mental function. Preventing the breakdown of this chemical and increasing its levels in the blood seems to reduce psychotic symptoms associated with certain mental conditions. Cannabidiol might also block some of the psychoactive effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBD does not have psychoactive affects.  So, you will NOT get high.

Full Spectrum - Also known as whole-plant cannabidiol (CBD) oil, full-spectrum CBD oil is a cannabis oil with high concentrations of CBD, as well as all other cannabinoids, terpenes, and trace amounts of THC found in the cannabis plant.

Broad Spectrum - Contains cannabidiol and all the other compounds within the plant except for THC

Isolate - CBD isolate is a crystalline solid or powder that contains 99% pure CBD. A traditional extraction process removes all the active compounds from the cannabis plant, followed by a refinement process that strips away all other phytocannabinoids, including THC, and any plant matter, leaving behind nothing but the CBD chemical compound in its purest form.

Ways to Consume Cannabis

Popular ways to consume CBD

Sublingually – Held under the tongue for up to 90 seconds so that the mucus membranes in the mouth can absorb the oil’s active ingredients. The benefit of consuming CBD oil sublingually is that the absorption process bypasses the digestive system and liver metabolization, allowing the compounds to reach your bloodstream and interact with the endocannabinoid system more quickly.  For quick effects, a sublingual CBD oil product is ideal.

Ingestion - When you ingest CBD oil, it passes through the digestive system and is metabolized by the liver, eventually sending its active compounds to your bloodstream. This form of administration is exactly how vitamins and other daily supplements are most typically taken.  This includes edibles, gummies and beverages, including coffees and teas.

Vaping - CBD enters your lungs and diffuses directly into your bloodstream. Because it doesn’t have to make its way through the digestive system or liver, the CBD enters your circulation faster. Also, less CBD is lost during vaporizing compared to the ingestion method.

Topical lotions - Products are absorbed through the skin so that they can interact with cells that are nearby the surface without ever entering the bloodstream. Topical CBD oil products are ideal for those looking for isolated pain relief or to address skin conditions where they are needed most.

Suppositories - CBD suppositories can help facilitate cannabinoids reaching the blood in much higher concentrations. Rectal administration also increases the uptake of CBD entering the bloodstream by almost 10 times, when compared with oral consumption. They can also be used vaginally during that time of the month to help soothe uncomfortable periods.
